Endodontics is a treatment that consists in the removal of the pulp tissue and its replacement by a filling material. It is what we commonly know as “killing the nerve”.

In the inner part of each tooth there are some channels where the dental pulp is, which is a soft tissue formed by blood vessels and nerves. When a decay appears in a tooth and we do not treat it, the decay progresses inside the tooth, until it reaches this pulp tissue. This produces an infection and the consequent inflammation of the nerve, and pain appears. Once this process occurs, the only appropriate treatment to save the tooth is to perform the endodontics.

The treatment consists of accessing the diseased and contaminated pulp tissue and eliminating it. After cleaning and disinfecting the pulp conduits, they are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material. Once the endodontics is done, the tooth is restored, using the most appropriate technique according to the state of the tooth, in order to restore the correct anatomy and functionality.

The treatment of ducts represents a treatment of great importance to avoid the loss of the damaged and compromised pieces, achieving in this way to keep them in the mouth once they have been rehabilitated, and that otherwise they would have to be extracted.

As we have said before, caries is the main cause of nerve infection, however there are other causes that can make it necessary to perform endodontic treatment, such as:

  • Fractures
  • Wear or erosion
  • Occlusal trauma
  • Pathologies that affect the oral structures, such as tumors, cysts, etc.

As always, the most important thing is prevention, and eliminate the causes that can cause pulpal damage as soon as they are detected. Hence the importance of eliminating cavities when they are diagnosed, even if they are small and the tooth does not hurt, because when it appears the pain is usually too late.

We must also go to the clinic when there is any fracture or breakage of a tooth, whatever the cause, when we see that a tooth is very worn, and when certain discomforts appear, such as pain when chewing, sensitivity with cold and heat, a phlegmon or a fistula, and also when there is a change of color in a tooth.

Endodontics is a completely painless process, which is performed under local anesthesia, also being a very frequent and fairly safe procedure.
